If you're British, you didn't get the joke. Americans consider it totalitarian
for the government to dictate our lifestyle choices. We're not even talking
about certain bad choices like smoking tobacco or using illegal drugs, we're
talking about a government that forces people to participate in a national
health care system, then forces them to eat right and exercise or not receive
medical treatment under that system (their taxes aren't refunded, though). I'm
even reminded of the scene in "1984" where Winston and all citizens of Oceania
are required to participate in morning exercise sessions, and chastised by the
telescreen instructor for failing to touch their toes.
Health care is an issue for the upcoming 2008 . election, and news about
this British proposal is sure to doom it for another decade.
