Egypt
As most people know, Egypt is a country which is located on the northwest edge of the African continent. The country is surrounded by Libya to the east, Jerusalem and the Red Sea to the west, the Mediterranean Sea on the north, and Sudan to the south of Egypt. Egypt covers an area of 9977385 sq.km =385229 sq.mi, area incl. inland waters: 1002000 sq.km = 386872 sq.mi.The country has a Republic type of government. The population in 2002 was approximately 66372,000. Their climate consists of, hot summers, cooler winters; which are semi-arid to arid. The life expectancy of the residents there is 62-69 years (male: 60-67; female: 64-70). The money used is the Egyptian pound which is equivalent to100 piastres, or 1000 milièmes.
95% of the country is desert, which means that only about 5% of the country is livable. In the small area of land that is usable, the people can grow agricultural products such as cotton, rice, maize, sugar, meat, beans, fruits, wheat, and vegetables. About 8 to 12% of the adults are unemployed. The country has mining products such as oil & natural gas, phosphates, manganese, uranium, gypsum, iron, limestone. They also have industrial products such as oil refining, cement, textiles, iron and steel, fertilizers, chemicals, food processing. Only about 30% of the workforce is women, the other 70% being men. The livestock (in millions) they have are donkeys (3), buffalos (3.4), camels (0.1), cattle (3.5), ducks (9), goats (3.3), pigeons (10), poultry (99), and sheep (4.4). Most of these statistics were taken in 1999 so they may have vary today.
The architecture of Egypt include the famous pyramids and some of the most famous ones include the Great Pyramids of Giza, Abu Simbel, and the Temples at Thebes. All of the major building projects have been organized and funded by the government. They are used for religious, military, and commemorative uses. They also reinforced the power and reputation of the Pharaoh. The people are skilled builders and most of the structures are made of mud bricks and wood. Structures such as temples and tombs were made of stone and were intended to last forever.
The people believe in the gods and the afterlife and the people prayed to the gods for help. They also believed they had to make sacrifices to the gods. The gods are worshiped in temples by priests on behalf of the kings. There is a cult statue of the god placed in the shrine. The public is not allowed in these temples. The public can worship their gods with their own small statues in their own homes.
The Egyptians have elaborate burial customs which they feel is necessary to ensure their immortality after they die. They preserve the bodies by mummification, hold burial ceremonies, then bury their dead along with goods which the deceased can use in the afterlife.
